Land for the new Toyosu fish market
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced that it will purchase 105,193 m2 of land for part of the site for the new Toyosu fish market. The relocation of the market from Tsukiji is targeted for 2014. The sellers are Tokyo Gas and Tokyo Gas Toyosu Development, a subsidiary of Tokyo Gas. The price is 55.9 billion yen [$650 million].

The plot being acquired spreads out in front of Shijo-Mae Station on the Yurikamome Line, approximately 4 km from the Tokyo Station area. It is located near the Harumi Ohashi Bridge on Harumi-dori Street in the direction of Ariake. Tokyo Gas’s Toyosu Plant stood on the site until 1988. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has been pursuing a land readjustment project since the closure of the plant.

To proceed with the land deal, negotiations were held between the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Tokyo Gas over the cost of handling the soil contamination stemming from the plant. An agreement was reached whereby Tokyo Gas and Tokyo Gas Toyosu Development would bear part of the cost in the amount of 7.8 billion yen [$90 million].

The 400,000 m2 area for the new Toyosu fish market will be divided into three development zones. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is aiming at opening the market in December 2014 and also plans to acquire other plots by the end of the year.
