(2) Overview
This area is one of Tokyo's major commercial districts, located on the eastern side of Shinjuku Station. It is the largest terminal station in Japan with an average of 750,000 passengers per day. Centered on the area between Yasukuni-dori and Shinjuku-dori Streets, it is an entertainment district featuring numerous department stores, retail stores and restaurants.

The buildings near Shinjuku Station are chiefly retail establishments, whereas many office buildings exist around the Shinjuku-gyoenmae subway station, a short distance from Shinjuku Station itself. There are no large-scale office buildings in this area, however, and most of the tenants are small to medium-sized companies.

The Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin-Line, which is scheduled to open in June 2008, will intersect with other subway lines at the Shinjuku-sanchome subway station and connect major terminals Ikebukuro Station and Shibuya Station. Department stores along the line are currently competing in renewing sales floors to attract customers.
